Prepaid Mobile Number Can’t be Deactivated Till 90 Days

Now it would be difficult for mobile operators to seize the account balance amount of prepaid mobile numbers and consequently deactivate the mobile number. This is because Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently made amendment in telecom consumer protection regulation which will not allow operators to deactivate the pre-paid number if kept idle till 90 days.

TRAI’s New Regulation to Deactivate Prepaid Mobile Numbers

According to new regulation for telecom operators, “No service provider shall deactivate the cellular mobile telephone connection of a pre-paid consumer for non-usage if an amount exceeding twenty rupees…is available in the account of such consumer.” So this is the great relief to pre-paid mobile customers to keep their mobile number alive if kept unused for longer days.
However, TRAI’s new regulation allows the telecom operators to deactivate pre-paid mobile number that has not been in use for a period of 90 days and has a balance of less than Rs 20. This new guideline shall come into effect from March 22, 2013.

Why TRAI has Issued New Regulation for Deactivating Pre-Paid Numbers

Many complaints were lodged to TRAI regarding deactivation of pre-paid mobile numbers. If for any reason customer did not use the SIM for 30 days, the mobile operators used to deactivate the mobile number without any notice. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has observed it that nearby 20 crore pre-paid cellular numbers got deactivated only because they were kept without use for period of 30 days and having an average pre-paid account balance of Rs 6. This affected a larger number of pre-paid subscribers to get their mobile number end up in 30 days. So TRAI has announced new guideline for telecom service providers for terminating the mobile number for the pre-paid customers. Under new regulation, telecom operators will be allowed to deduct an amount, not exceeding Rs 20, every month based from balance amount in inactive mobile number till the number is not deactivated and the balance falls below Rs 20. Moreover, the amended regulation provides pre-paid mobile customers to reactivate their mobile connections by paying a “reasonable amount” to their respective operator. “A consumer whose connection is deactivated shall be given a grace period of 15 days within which he can reactivate the same number.”

Dear Customer w.e.f. 22-03-2013 if there is no usage i.e. Calls/SMS, Data, VAS or Recharge for a continuous period of 90 days, your Services will be deactivated.

On non usage of 90 days and balance of Rs.20 or more, Rs.20 will be deducted from the available balance and the Deactivation date will be extended by 30 days.

On deactivation, all balance will be forfeited & grace period of 15 days will be provided for retaining the number, by doing a recharge of Rs.20.
